Shiv Charan Singh shares a love story from China

“Love is always a tragedy. But there is also always a beauty. You can’t have the beauty without tragedy and the tragedy without beauty is a terrible tragedy! The beauty is what survives the tragedy. The tragedy surrounding the beauty serves to confirm the beauty. Look how much art, music, poetry has come out of this. There is a Chinese story about a Princess and a farmer boy. The Princess visits his small home and he let’s her in. They fall in love. The King finds out and puts each of them on islands on the opposite sides of the land. This is to ensure they may never meet. The Princess shouldn’t have gone to the farmer boy’s home and the boy shouldn’t have let her in. But he did. This is love. Then every year, on Valentine’s Day, all the birds in China fly to make a bridge between the two islands so the Princess and the farmer boy can meet in the middle. This is also the beauty of love – not just the tragedy.”
